The foot overbridge (FOB) connecting Bhau Daji Road to Matunga West near King's Circle, an age-old yet crucial connector, has fallen into a state of disrepair. Widely used by schoolchildren and senior citizens, the bridge has become a safety hazard.
The staircases are uneven and in poor condition. Negotiating these with their broken railings is extremely challenging.
Residents highlighted the problem of debris and overgrowth at both ends, especially the Matunga East side. The bridge, which links Matunga East and West, is divided into two sections. The portion over the railway line is wider, while the road-crossing extension on the east side is narrow and in worse shape. Railway officials stated that they would inspect the bridge, while BMC local ward authorities confirmed that a maintenance team would be dispatched to assess the structure.
Several locals have asked for an upgrade or quick repairs. We must see that our infrastructure is regularly maintained so that people are safe while using it.
One is always advising people to use FOBs, which is the correct thing to do, rather than the criminal and deadly habit of trying to cross the tracks. Yet, when FOBs seem dangerous or even inaccessible, then people tend to take these extremely dangerous measures. This is not to say that all those track crossers should make excuses and shun FOBs. Yet, any kind of precarious state only encourages people to try this short cut options and risk increases substantially.
Let repairs begin to the staircase at least, and railings. The debris, comprising several bamboo poles, can be cleared away quickly. The railings can be cleared of some clothes or material on them and strengthened. At least that can be a start to making this bridge easier to negotiate.
