A ticketless passenger allegedly pushed and assaulted a railway ticket checker while trying to flee after being caught without a valid ticket on a local train at Andheri station, leaving the checker with an eye injury, a report on our website said.
The ticket checker was on duty from 2 pm to 10 pm on the Virar-Dadar route, on August 18. He found a passenger travelling without a ticket around 6.40 pm on the Dadar-bound train and the passenger was told to pay a fine. When the train reached Andheri station, the passenger allegedly got down and attempted to flee, with the checker giving chase.
The passenger allegedly pushed the ticket checker, attempting to escape and the checker was injured above his eye in the process. Though the passenger was nabbed this shows risks faced by personnel while carrying out checks.
Strict action should be taken against the passenger not just for ticketless travel but assaulting Railway personnel. In fact, more awareness should be created about consequences of physical assault on personnel. This may be for ticketless travel or any errant behaviour. The passenger must be informed that in case of any altercation or argument, there is a proper avenue and process must be followed. They may have recourse to other authorities. Fleeing the checker by pushing and shoving is unacceptable, striking officials or manhandling them will invite strict punishment.
Stations may also have announcements to this effect. May be, authorities can think of ticket checkers carrying buzzers to call other personnel to their aid if attacked. Railway personnel can't be attacked for doing their duty.
