Yesterday, this editorial space highlighted the importance of clearing away fallen trees and broken tree branches. With so many trees falling across the city, roads and even by lanes are littered with fallen trees, with authorities lifting when possible or chopping the wood to cart it away.
This is done specifically because the collapsed trees are a roadblock and need to be moved to make way for vehicles. Foliage has been strewn on pavements too, impeding pedestrian mobility.
We stressed that those responsible must consider the job done only after the space is completely cleaned, notwithstanding the shortage of personnel. We also stated that people should not attempt to clear away the foliage themselves, as it may be dangerous to do so.
On that same track, it is vital that laypersons stay some distance away from infra broken by the falling tree. Do not touch broken fences. Keep away from half-broken benches as the other part may be unstable.
Do not step into pits or places where the tree has uprooted and keeled over. Your foot may sink in, resulting in injury. Avoid, if possible, touching smashed falls or trying to balance on brittle tiles. Be wary of a tree, even if small, just next to a fallen one. That may be unstable, too.
There is every chance that the surrounding area may be affected too, and it is deceptively stable. Do not lean on it, test it in some way or try to access it till it is repaired and secured firmly back in place.
Our safety is the authority's concern, but we must steer clear of imperilling ourselves in any way.
