Never underestimate water, its depth, power, or velocity. Many have learned that to their peril; a 20-year-old man recently drowned and died in a water-filled quarry in Diva, Thane. Officials stated he must have misjudged the water depth.

According to officials, the drowned youngster had accessed the quarry for a swim and eventually perished in the deep water.

As the monsoon gains momentum, we will have revellers drawn to the sea, full lakes, gushing rivers and ponds. The wisest option is not to enter the water, as these are largely not monitored. Our beaches do have lifeguards, though. Enjoy the water from a distance. Take your pictures if you wish to for social media, but do not step into the water while doing so. Distracted in your bid for a good shot, you may misjudge depth or current and find yourself in trouble.

We will also have water bodies that beckon people to take a dip this season. Stay away simply because one cannot judge currents or even see them from the surface. Even standing on ledges or sitting, posing on rocks is hazardous. Water is deceptively canny and quick. It will take you away in the blink of an eye.

Several people tout strong swimming skills. While swimming may help you survive in some instances, water will overpower the strongest swimmer, so all your prowess is nothing when there are strong currents. There are the defiant who, at times, ignore the lifeguard warning whistles and turn a blind eye to caution signs or red flags. Even ‘locals' like fishermen may warn people, but they do not pay heed. Adhere, obey and pay attention.
