This paper highlighted the unveiling of a pedestrian-friendly Kala Ghoda district initiative on Tuesday morning. A lane from the defunct Rhythmic house and adjoining arterial by lanes in the South Mumbai hub, near Jehangir Art Gallery. will become pedestrian-centric on weekend evenings, with no entry for vehicles for a couple of hours.
The precinct was artsy and upscale, and there was an accent on culture and tradition. Outdoor dining is planned for the inauguration; high tables, high chairs and bar stools gave total Europe vibes. The walkway, too, was paved over with stone giving it a cobblestone feel. One could literally imagine one was in Europe, such was the charming atmosphere on unveiling day. We also saw three art installations that lent more character to the initiative and wall murals that were all eye-catching.
While a lot of cleaning up was for the benefit of the VIPs at the function, we as locals also have responsibility towards maintenance and taking pride in the pedestrian-only effort and precinct.
Our primary goal as visitors should be to keep the surroundings as clean as possible. It is in our interest to preserve this with pride and avoid any kind of breakage, defacing walls, littering or tampering with the sculptures/installations.
The authorities must have proper signage at the entrance specifying when these lanes become pedestrian-only. Specific timings, days of the week and rules should all be visible up front. Signage, lighting, exit routes if any and any allowance for emergency vehicles should also be clearly marked. Clarity means no confusion. No confusion means no confrontation. Put your best foot forward at Kala Ghoda.
