Hakim Nelson and Jason Stenson filled out their initial marriage license application online. Nelson is a male-to-female transsexual who lives as a woman and hopes to have gender-reassignment surgery.
Nelson's State Benefit Card identifies him as female because the official who issued it assumed his gender based on his appearance.

Ten days after Nelson and Stenson obtained their marriage license, they returned to the city clerk's office and were married. "I think we just made history," Stenson told Nelson.
Not exactly. Because they are "technically not married," according to, a matrimonial attorney.
And after the New York Post inquired about the two, New York City's marriage bureau required another couple with male names to present birth certificates to get married.
