Former Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf logged onto Facebook yesterday to defend himself against an arrest warrant related to claims he was involved in the 2007 assassination of Benazir Bhutto.
"The fact that one is witnessing opposition trying to build pressure upon myself and other APML [All Pakistan Muslim League] members goes to show that they are afraid of us and our national movement," Musharraf said on his Facebook profile.
"Time to stand up against deception and injustice that has constantly eaten away at our national unity. Pakistan First! PM," he wrote.
The post received more than 571 likes and 198 comments in support.
The page, which has more than 3,80,000 hits, was flooded with messages of support. One woman wrote, "The arrest warrant is such a joke... I hope the days of this government are numbered now."
The Facebook comments were Musharraf's first public statement since his London spokesperson said that the ex-president would not comply with an arrest warrant issued by an Islamabad court over the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
A Pakistani anti-terrorism court ordered Musharraf to appear for a hearing February 19 over claims about the assassination of ex-premier Bhutto.
