Researchers at Harvard and Stanford have engineered marine bacteria to accelerate olivine weathering, potentially enhancing the ocean’s ability to store atmospheric carbon

Harvard and Stanford researchers genetically engineered the marine bacterium Alteromonas macleodii to accelerate olivine weathering, boosting atmospheric carbon capture.

Tested in custom bioreactors, the modified bacteria sped up olivine dissolution in seawater 2.6-fold.

Dissolving silicate minerals releases magnesium, iron, and silicate, converting dissolved atmospheric CO2 into stable bicarbonate to create a biological way to enhance marine carbon storage.
