Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on Thursday called on BRICS nations and the wider international community to strongly condemn what he described as violations of international law by the United States and Israel amid the ongoing conflict and rising tensions in West Asia.

Addressing the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting in New Delhi, Araghchi accused Western powers of pursuing aggressive policies and urged member countries to take collective steps to prevent what he called the politicisation of international institutions and continued violations of the United Nations Charter.

Iran says BRICS represents emerging global order

During his address, Araghchi said Iran views BRICS as a symbol of a changing global order increasingly shaped by countries of the Global South.

The Iranian Foreign Minister said the bloc represented a growing shift away from Western dominance in international affairs and argued that developing nations were becoming major architects of the future global political and economic system.

According to Araghchi, what was once considered an ambitious geopolitical idea was gradually becoming reality, though he warned that the transition remained fragile because of resistance from established global powers.

He claimed that declining Western powers were reacting aggressively in an attempt to preserve their influence and reverse emerging geopolitical changes.

Iran links conflict with broader challenge to Western influence

Araghchi described Iran's ongoing confrontation with Western countries as part of a wider struggle against what he termed "Western hegemony."

The Iranian minister argued that Tehran's actions were not only linked to its own national interests but also connected to the interests of BRICS nations and countries across the Global South.

He stated that Iranian forces had sacrificed lives while resisting policies pursued by Western powers and accused the United States of acting with a sense of immunity in international affairs.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions between Iran, the United States and Israel following recent military escalations and disputes over regional security.

Calls for stronger action from BRICS nations

While thanking BRICS countries for their support and solidarity, Araghchi urged member nations to intensify diplomatic and political efforts against what he described as unilateral actions by Western countries.

He said several BRICS nations were familiar with political pressure, sanctions and coercive diplomacy from the United States.

The Iranian Foreign Minister also accused Western countries of enabling violence, sovereignty violations and instability in different parts of the Global South, including regions in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

According to Araghchi, actions that were once viewed internationally as unacceptable are now increasingly tolerated by some Western governments.

Iran demands condemnation of US and Israeli actions

Araghchi specifically called on BRICS nations and the broader international community to condemn what he described as illegal actions carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran.

He urged countries to take practical measures aimed at preventing further escalation and ensuring accountability for violations of international law.

The Iranian minister also called for efforts to stop what he described as warmongering and impunity for countries accused of violating the principles of the United Nations Charter.

His remarks reflected Tehran's attempt to rally diplomatic backing from emerging economies at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty in West Asia.

BRICS meeting focuses on global governance and security

The BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting is being held from May 14 to May 15 and is expected to focus on global economic governance, geopolitical coordination and development priorities among member nations.

India assumed the BRICS chairmanship on January 1 this year after taking over from Brazil.

This marks the fourth time India is holding the presidency of the bloc after previously hosting BRICS summits in 2012, 2016 and 2021.

The discussions are taking place against the backdrop of rising global tensions, economic uncertainty and ongoing geopolitical conflicts in multiple regions.
