The death toll from devastating flash floods and landslides in Nepal has risen to 903, Nepalese authorities said on Monday, as rescue and relief operations continue across the affected areas, PTI reported.
The floods and landslides, reportedly triggered by an ice-rock avalanche along the Tibet border, have caused widespread destruction, with thousands of people reported missing or uncontactable.
Around 20,000 security personnel have been deployed as part of the rescue and relief operations, while 14 military helicopters are being used to evacuate stranded people and provide emergency assistance.
Six specialised surgical teams have also been deployed to provide medical aid to those affected by the disaster.
Multiple Indian nationals remain untraceable following the flash floods and landslides. Authorities have confirmed the evacuation of several Indian citizens, while hundreds are reported to be missing or uncontactable.
Among those being tracked are pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh, including 14 pilgrims of Andhra Pradesh origin, seven from the state and seven NRIs, according to information shared by the state government, ANI reported.
Meanwhile, a group of Telugu pilgrims safely reached Kathmandu after being evacuated from Tibet through the Kodari checkpoint.
According to the Government of Andhra Pradesh, 144 pilgrims reached Kathmandu from Saga County, Tibet, at around 11 pm on Sunday. The group included 20 Telugu pilgrims, including Sastry and three members of his family.
The pilgrims are scheduled to travel to Mumbai before proceeding to their respective hometowns.
Indian authorities and specialised teams are assisting the ongoing rescue efforts in Nepal. An Indian specialised tunnel-rescue team and technical experts have been deployed at the Trishuli-3A hydropower tunnel, where workers are reportedly trapped.
State authorities are also maintaining communication with their Nepalese counterparts to track and assist Indian nationals stranded in the affected region.
The disaster has severely affected infrastructure, with more than 25 miles of roads and 40 suspension bridges reportedly destroyed.
Heavy rainfall, landslides and blocked valleys continue to hamper rescue and relief operations. Authorities are also monitoring a potentially dangerous temporary lake formed in Tibet following the flooding, amid concerns over further risks to downstream areas, the news agency reported.
With secondary hazards continuing to threaten affected regions, authorities are focusing on evacuating stranded residents, locating missing people and providing emergency medical assistance.
The Government of Andhra Pradesh said it remains in continuous coordination with Nepalese authorities regarding the identification, evacuation and welfare of Indian citizens, particularly pilgrims from the state.
