In a significant diplomatic and defence development, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth conducted an unannounced visit to Israel on Monday to confer with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The high-level discussions focused heavily on strategic responses to Iran, reflecting the rapidly intensifying geopolitical friction across the region.

Neither the Pentagon nor the Israeli Prime Minister's Office immediately provided official comments regarding the confidential meeting, which was first broken by Axios. Israel's Army Radio reported that the dialogue took place at a military air force base located in Israel's southern desert.

Addressing his sudden travel, Hegseth later posted on social media that he had visited US service members stationed within the US Central Command area of responsibility - a critical operational domain spanning the Middle East, northeast Africa, and parts of Central Asia.

Hegseth's unannounced arrival coincides with a sharp escalation in regional volatility, driven by escalating standoffs between Washington and Tehran over maritime access in the Strait of Hormuz, alongside intensified missile and drone attacks launched by Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi forces against Saudi Arabian targets.

The meeting also carries deep political implications, taking place just one day after US President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Prime Minister Netanyahu ahead of Israel's impending parliamentary election. This vote marks the nation's first major democratic ballot since the devastating October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, putting national security at the absolute centre of the campaign.

Simultaneously, the fragile situation on the ground remains deadly. Palestinian health officials reported that Israeli strikes and gunfire killed at least four Palestinians in separate incidents across the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, including a married couple and a 17-year-old youth. The Israeli military confirmed it targeted an active militant in the area, though further operational specifics were not disclosed.
