Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul Hasan Lanjhar confirmed that 216 prisoners had escaped the jail adding that 78 were recaptured within 24 hours. He also stated that a dozen policemen and inmates were injured in the violence and one prisoner was shot dead while attempting to flee

Malir Jail also houses over 100 Indian prisoners, mostly poor fishermen jailed for allegedly fishing illegally in Pakistan’s waters. Meanwhile, law enforcement authorities have launched a joint operation to track down the remaining escapees
