Meanwhile, Brendon McCullum, who decided to call curtains on his international career before the World Twenty20 in March, was left out of the 13-man squad.

Anderson, who played a vital role for his side in the 2015 World Cup, suffered a stress-related back injury in May and had only begun playing competitive cricket since last month, ESPNcricinfo reported.

The inclusion of veteran batsman Elliott, who returned to the T20 squad after he was left to recover from a broken wrist during the ODI series, is expected to strengthen the middle order.

Kane Williamson, who will succeed McCullum as captain in the World T20, was also named captain for the Sri Lanka series.

The 13-man T20 squad for the Sri Lanka series is as follows:
Kane Williamson (capt), Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Grant Elliott, Martin Guptill, Mitchell McClenaghan, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Luke Ronchi, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor.
