Dhoni attracts attention after captaincy comment

The Indian skipper’s comments were viewed by some pundits as if he was trying to suggest that he cannot be dropped by selectors.

Bishan Singh Bedi, the former India captain, who is active on Twitter, wrote: "lk MS Dhoni's courage/gumption- no new capt up until 2015 in all formats! Wonder what the selectors R paid 4?I C lot of quiet on the isue!!"

According to PTI, Dhoni said at a press conference in the Capital on Monday: "It's a point of no return with the World Cup literally one year away from now. It won't give a new guy the ideal time to play at least 70-80-90 games (before) the World Cup.

That's what we would like to have him play before the World Cup." Dhoni's thoughts made cricket lovers recall how the Board of Control for Cricket in India, in 1995, appointed Mohammed Azharuddin for a year before the 1996 World Cup.

Some experts reckoned the BCCI were wrong in giving the then captain a long rope. India exited the mega event in the semi-final against Sri Lanka and Azharuddin ultimately lost his captaincy after the team returned from an unsuccessful tour of England.

Dhoni's success notwithstanding, he could have lost his captaincy after a demoralising series loss in the 2011-12 series Down Under where India lost
0-4. Reportedly, then selector Mohinder Amarnath, was not in favour of him continuing as Test captain.
