Sri Lankan Angelo Matthews has decided to step down from Pune Warriors captaincy for the rest of the Twenty20 season

Mathews was appointed the skipper ahead of the season but dropped himself midway after a string of poor performances. And with Aaron Finch doing well as the captain, Mathews feels it is logical for Finch to carry on leading the team.

Mathews' decision came moments after he was affirmed as the Sri Lanka captain for next month's Champions Trophy.

"I would like to confirm that I have decided to stand aside as Pune Warriors franchise captain for the rest of the current season to ensure team leadership continuity," he said.

"It is in our best interests that the captaincy is not switched frequently as we strive to achieve the best balanced team for each different opponent," Mathews said in a statement released by Pune Warriors.

"Given that Aaron (Finch) is likely to play in all our remaining games then it is logical that he continues to be our captain. I will naturally provide my fullest support at all times to Aaron and my teammates."

"I am thankful to the franchise for understanding my decision and for all the support received by my fellow team-mates and our fans during the past few weeks," the Sri Lankan all-rounder added.
