In the second Test match against South Africa, Team India suffered a loss by 408 runs at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati.
South Africa's Simon Harmer's bowling heroics were the highlights of the second Test match. Bowling 23 overs, he bagged six wickets by conceding 37 runs. With this, the Proteas scripted history by clinching their first Test series win in India in 25 years.
Following the humiliating loss, India's current head coach Gautam Gambhir said that it will be the decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to decide upon his future. He also urged the board to consider the results Team India got in England and the Champions Trophy 2025.
While speaking at the press conference, Gambhir said, "It is up to the BCCI to decide my future. But I am the same guy who got you results in England and was coach for Champions Trophy".
"The blame lies with everyone and starts with me," he conceded in his first reactions after the 0-2 series defeat.
Further speaking, the coach said that he doesn't want to blame any individual for the loss, and the team as a collective unit should be blamed for the results.
"We need to play better. From 95/1 to 122/7 is not acceptable. You don't blame any individual or any particular shot. Blame lies with everyone. I never blamed individuals and won't do it going forward," said the 44-year-old former cricketer.
This was the second time in merely 13 months that India ended up whitewashed at home, severely denting their chances of qualifying for the World Test Championship.
Under head coach Gambhir, India have now collectively lost five Tests against New Zealand and South Africa at home. It is also the first time in 66 years that the team has lost five Tests in a period of seven months.
With the conclusion of the longest format series, Team India and South Africa will now engage in the white-ball series, from Sunday. It will include three One-Day International (ODI) matches and five T20 International (T20I) games.
