IND vs WI 1st ODI | 'You cannot play for long looking for numbers...': Virat Kohli on his unbeaten ton

In the first ODI match against the West Indies, Team India secured a win by eight wickets at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.

During the match, Team India's star batsman Virat Kohli delivered an unbeaten knock of 139 runs off just 88 deliveries. His knock was laced with 10 boundaries and nine maximums.

With this, he completed 15,080 runs and also became the second batsman in the format's history to achieve the feat.

After the match, Kohli stated that he has been playing this long with the aim of helping the team win matches and not achieve big numbers. The right-handed batsman also considers himself lucky to have been able to contribute to team's victory.

"If you look at it from a numbers perspective, it is a big number. But the goal is simple: to make the team win from difficult situations. That is what I have tried to do over the years. You can only play for this long if you are looking to make the team win. You cannot play for long looking for numbers. If you get numbers, you would compromise on the main goal," he said.

"I am lucky to have been in this position for so long, and to tick off this big number to another win is quite special," added Kohli.

With this, the "Men in Blue" have taken a lead by 1-0 against the Caribbean team. The second ODI match between the teams will be played on September 30 at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati.

IND vs WI 1st ODI: Match summary

Indian captain Shubman Gill scored a blistering 110 runs off 108 deliveries, along with Kohli's century, as India comfortably defeated West Indies in the first ODI. Gill's innings included 13 fours and one six before he was caught in the deep off Roston Chase's bowling.

Earlier, Kuldeep Yadav was the star with the ball for India as he took four wickets for 40 runs in his ten overs. Prasidh Krishna chipped in with two wickets, while Nitish Kumar Reddy got one.

For West Indies, Justin Greaves scored a blistering 101 runs early in the game. He was well supported by Amir Jangoo, who scored a quickfire 58 runs in the death overs as West Indies managed to score 296 runs in their 50 overs.
