In the third ODI match against the West Indies, Team India suffered a loss by five wickets at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh.
During the match, Team India's veteran opening batsman Rohit Sharma departed after scoring 92 runs in 85 balls. His knock included 10 boundaries and three maximums. He missed his well-deserved century by just eight runs.
Legendary Team India's cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment at Rohit missing out on his century. The former cricketer said that he would like to see Rohit have more ODI centuries than his age till the time he retires from international cricket.
"The reason I was disappointed with Rohit getting out on 92 is because he didn't get a hundred and he might possibly quit international cricket after the end of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027. And at that particular point of time, when he decides to call it a day, I personally would like Rohit to have more ODI hundreds than his age. Had he gotten a century in the third ODI, he would have moved closer to achieving that feat with his 36th hundred," he said on JioStar.
"For me, it's a special thing when a player's hundreds outnumber his age at retirement. It shows the kind of career they have had and the standard they have kept for so many years. That is why I really want Rohit to reach that mark. In my last year of international cricket, I wanted to get as many Test centuries as my age, and I got out in the 90s thrice. If I'd got those hundreds, then my centuries would have matched the age of my retirement, which was 38," added Gavaskar.
Rohit entered the record books by becoming only the fourth opening batsman in ODI's history to complete 10,000 runs. The right-handed batsman has 10,090 runs in 204 ODI matches with an average of 54.83. He also has 33 centuries and 50 half-centuries.
Legendary Sachin Tendulkar leads the chart with 15,310 runs, followed by Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya with 12,740 and West Indies great Chris Gayle with 10,179 runs.
