Powered by a first-innings century from Devdutt Padikkal and a brilliant ten-wicket match haul by spinner Manav Suthar, India secured a convincing 165-run win over Sri Lanka in Galle on Wednesday, marking their landmark 600th Test match.
Since making their Test debut in 1932, India's progression in the red-ball format has been remarkable. Though not historically dominant from the start, historic figures from CK Nayadu and Kapil Dev to Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli have continuously redefined Indian cricket's journey.
The evolution is particularly evident in the bowling department. While the 1960s and 1970s relied heavily on the legendary spin quartet of Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, and Srinivas Venkataraghavan, modern Indian teams feature a well-rounded attack. Bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have established a pace legacy alongside elite spinners like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

101st to 200th Test: 25 wins, 32 defeats, 43 draws (Win-Loss Ratio: 0.78)
201st to 300th Test: 21 wins, 26 defeats, 1 tie, 52 draws (Win-Loss Ratio: 0.80)
301st to 400th Test: 32 wins, 31 defeats, 37 draws (Win-Loss Ratio: 1.032)
401st to 500th Test: 42 wins, 28 defeats, 30 draws (Win-Loss Ratio: 1.50)
501st to 600th Test: 57 wins, 31 defeats, 2 draws (Win-Loss Ratio: 1.83)
In their opening 300 Tests, India managed only 56 wins against 98 losses and 145 draws, posting an 18 per cent win rate. However, from the 301st to the 600th Test, India accumulated 131 wins, 90 defeats, and 69 draws, taking their win percentage above 43 per cent.
The 21st century marked a resurgence under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli. In the modern era, India has won 126 of 270 Tests (46% win rate), including 51 away victories in 146 matches abroad. Under Kohli, India's most successful Test captain with 40 wins in 68 matches, the team achieved seven Test wins across SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia).
In the Galle Test, India posted 462 in their first innings before great bowling from Suthar helped restrict Sri Lanka to 284. Despite a second-innings collapse to 193, India set a target of 372 and dismissed Sri Lanka for 206 to claim a 1-0 series lead.
