IPL organisers pay for use of music for opening ceremony

Organisers pay licence fees to IPRS for use of music on the very day that mid-day published its report on the issue; the event will be held in Kolkata today


The day mid-day published a report on the organisers of the IPL opening ceremony having failed to acquire a licence for the use of music during the event, the Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) received the money.

mid-day had reported yesterday that IPRS had sent a legal notice to the IPL, BCCI and Encompass Events Pvt Ltd, the company organising the opening ceremony, for allegedly failing to take the licence. Since the payment has been made, however, the notice will now be withdrawn.

According to a source, "The licence fee, which was being delayed by the IPL and the event company was paid by the officials after the article was published in mid-day. The authorities dealing with IPRS for music licensing made the required payment on Monday afternoon, after which the licence was given to them."

Kunal Sareen, vice-president and head (licensing), IPRS, said, "Finally received licence fees from Encompass. They made the payment through a demand draft at our Delhi office. Thanks for your support."
