Former Australia captain Ian Chappell reckoned a few batsmen in the Australian line-up are lucky to avoid the axe since the selectors picked the squad for the first two Tests that are scheduled to be played in quick succession.

Chappell told ESPN Cricinfo that the Hobart Test could be the last chance for a few players after Australia lost their fourth Test in a row in Perth yesterday.

"How long are the selectors going to give them to improve? I don't think they've got much longer," said Chappell, who felt Mitchell Marsh and Adam Voges are on shaky ground. "Marsh has got to get enough runs to be a No.6 batsman and Voges is vulnerable," he said.

Chappell praised the South Africans for the way they got back into the game: "They've got their old resilience back," he said, referring to the days of Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis.
