Mumbai left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Shams Mulani, 29, has been a consistent performer, with 282 wickets and 2,671 runs from 62 first-class games. Recently named Player of the Series for his performances in the two unofficial Tests between India âA' and Australia âA', Mulani contributed 39 runs and claimed 3-69 in Mumbai's innings-and-155-run win over Chandigarh in their Ranji Trophy season-opener at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.
Despite missing out on the upcoming India âA' tour to New Zealand, Mulani remains optimistic about his chances of earning a place in the national set-up.
"Yes, the door has not opened yet, but I'm a patient guy. I'll keep working hard," Mulani said.
"I'm really proud to be playing for Mumbai, and I enjoy it because there is a different pressure altogether to keep performing, considering the bench strength we have. We've got a very strong bench, and you cannot afford to fall short when we are playing. So, I don't take any games for granted. I try to perform in each and every game and give my best to the team. I'll keep putting up performances and hopefully, one day, the door opens," he told reporters after Mumbai's win on Tuesday.
Mulani also acknowledged the support he receives from his teammates, saying it helps him stay motivated despite the disappointment of missing out on selection.
"I think everyone in the team supports me, and that helps a lot. There are times when you feel you should have got a chance on the New Zealand tour. It's human nature to feel disappointed, but my job is to keep performing for Team Mumbai. I'm proud to represent Mumbai whenever I can, and I will continue doing that," he said.
Mulani added that he regularly speaks to the Mumbai and India âA' coaches about how he can improve his game and take the next step in his career.
