Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar believes star batter Shubman Gill can overhaul Rohit Sharma's record of most runs in a single ODI innings. Rohit had smashed a mind-blowing 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014, and to date, that remains the highest individual ODI score.
However, speaking on 'The Great Indian Cricket Show' on Doordarshan, Sanjay Bangar explained why he felt Shubman Gill had the ability to go past Rohit Sharma's garangutan score. He shed light on how Gill already has a double hundred to his name, which came against New Zealand in Hyderabad. He also has the ability to bat for long periods and if he manages to do that again, Bangar has full faith that Gill will go past Rohit Sharma's 264.
Here's what Bangar said in the show:
"Shubman Gill has also scored a double hundred in one-day cricket. So, he has tasted it. And if Shubman Gill plays 45-46 overs, I think he can break the record."
Sanjay Bangar also claimed that Yuvraj Singh's record of fastest T20I fifty for India of 12 balls will be broken by Abhishek Sharma. Abhishek has been a student of Yuvraj and Bangar feels he is the apt player who can break the record. He said:
"He's (Abhishek) his (Yuvraj) student. And he hits sixes in the same way."
However, Sanjay Bangar claimed that no one else will be able to play international cricket for as long as the legendary Sachin Tendulkar did. Tendulkar played for a whopping 24 years, and Bangar feels that is a testament to his greatness. On this, he stated:
"Do you know how long was Sachin Tendulkar's meditation? 24 years. So, in this era, I think no one will be able to survive 24 years. That's why no one will be able to break his record."
Shubman Gill-led Team India is currently performing well against West Indies, having bowled them out for just 162 on Day 1, and now their lead has extended over the 100-run mark. They will look to bat out the entire Day 2 and then pile on the misery on the Windies for the rest of the Test.
