The Ajinkya Rahane-led North Mumbai Panthers kicked off their Nuvama Private T20 Mumbai League 2026 campaign in commanding fashion, registering a 21-run victory over Suryakumar Yadav's Triumph Knights Mumbai North East at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.
Chasing a massive target of 210, the Triumph Knights suffered early setbacks with both openers falling cheaply. The early wickets brought India's T20 international captain Suryakumar Yadav to the crease to a thunderous reception from the local crowd. Suryakumar immediately went on the attack, striking four boundaries to help guide his team to 56/2 by the conclusion of the Powerplay.
However, left-arm spinner Rahul Sawant quickly turned the momentum back in the Panthers' favour, removing both Suryakumar (19) and Sagar Mishra in a decisive spell. Following the breakthroughs, impact substitute Nutan Goel formed a partnership alongside Harshal Jadhav, scoring 55 runs for the fifth wicket.
The 20-year-old Nutan, who survived an early dropped catch on 24, went on to reach a 32-ball half-century by smashing consecutive sixes. Despite Goel's spectacular lone crusade of 93 off 56 deliveries, the mounting required run-rate proved too much for the Knights, who were eventually restricted to 188/8.
Earlier, the North Mumbai Panthers capitalised on an excellent batting surface after being put in to bat first. Openers Ajinkya Rahane (24) and Hardik Tamore launched an aggressive assault, combining for a 67-run opening stand within the Powerplay. While Rahane fell shortly after the blistering start, Tamore anchored the innings well, compiling a fluent 67 off 43 balls that included nine boundaries and two sixes to claim the tournament's first individual fifty.
Following Tamore's dismissal, middle-order contributions from Aayush Zimare (23) and Ayush Vartak (39) kept the scoreboard ticking over at a brisk pace.
It was Tanush Kotian who provided the definitive late flourish. Kotian blasted an unbeaten 30 off just 15 deliveries to push the Panthers to an imposing 209/5, marking the highest team total of the young season.
The Mumbai T20 League is being played at Wankhede Stadium, with the final for both men's and women's scheduled for June 13.
