Bridgetown: South Africa were thwarted by Narsingh Deonarine and Shivnarine Chanderpaul before lunch, after they made a bright start to the third and final Test against West Indies on Saturday.
The South African new-ball pair of Morne Morkel and Dale Steyn removed West Indies openers Dale Richards and Chris Gayle cheaply before Deonarine and Chanderpaul carried the home team to 76 for two at the interval on the opening day at Kensington Oval.
Morkel made the breakthrough, when he trapped Richards lbw for a duck, and Steyn then bowled West Indies captain Gayle for 20 to leave the hosts 21 for two.
But the Proteas were made to toil for the remainder of the session, as Deonarine, not out on 28, and Chanderpaul, not out on 22, put on 55 for the third wicket with little or no alarms.
