India women's team coach Amol Muzumdar said the side needs to rethink its approach in the shortest format as it looks to recover from the disappointment of failing to qualify for the knockout stage of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026.
The 'Women in Blue' suffered a six-wicket defeat against Australia at Lord's, where Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner scored half-centuries to successfully chase down a target of 171 runs. This loss resulted in the elimination of Team India from the tournament.
Speaking after the game, Muzumdar stressed that India must change their T20 tactics if they wish to bridge the gap with Australia and England.
"I think we really have to rethink our strategy for our T20 game. We really need to wrap our heads around what combinations we are going to play," the India coach said.
The head coach expressed his view that the skipper Harmanpreet Kaur should remain at the helm of the national squad, though he clarified that the final call lies with the selection committee.
When questioned further about the specific changes India needs to implement moving forward, Muzumdar pointed toward the team's execution with the ball and in the field as major concerns that require immediate rectification.
"It's just that I think our bowling also needs to up the ante a little bit. I don't think our bowling or our fielding helped the cause, to be very honest. So I guess we need to really go back and think about how we're going to approach the T20 game and also be in that positive frame of mind," the India women's coach added.
Muzumdar further added that the Indian bowling attack is inexperienced and would need some time to develop their skills. The Indian women's coach further added that the team's bowling attack would look different in 18 months.
"If you look at our bowling attack, it's been very inexperienced as far as international cricket is concerned. So I've said this before in the previous press conference that give us 18 months, and this attack will be a different one," Muzumdar concluded.
