In a match dominated by runs, India began their first innings with a batting masterclass. A trio of centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (101 off 159 balls, 16 fours), captain Shubman Gill (147 off 227 balls, 19 fours, 1 six), and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant (134 off 178 balls, 12 fours, 6 sixes) powered India to a commanding total of 471. Despite England’s spirited response, which narrowed the deficit to just six runs, India returned to the crease in the second innings with renewed intent
Vice-captain KL Rahul, who narrowly missed out on a fifty in the first innings, made amends with a fluent century. His 120* anchored India’s innings on Day 4.
Meanwhile, Pant delivered another breathtaking knock, smashing 118 off 140 deliveries to register his second hundred of the match. His innings featured 15 fours and three sixes and was instrumental in building a massive 195-run partnership with Rahul
With Pant's twin tons, he became the first Indian wicketkeeper-batter to score two centuries in a single Test match. This collective batting brilliance marked just the sixth instance in Test history of a team producing five individual centuries in a single match
Remarkably, India became only the second team to achieve this rare feat in an away Test, following Australia’s legendary effort in 1955 against West Indies in Kingston. In that match, Australian batters Colin McDonald, Neil Harvey, Keith Miller, Ron Archer, and Richie Benaud all scored centuries in a single innings to post 758/8 declared, securing an innings victory
