Atletico Madrid has reportedly informed Spanish giants Barcelona that they must activate a staggering 500 million-euro release clause if they wish to sign the Argentine attacker Julian Alvarez, amid escalating transfer rumours.
Speculation regarding the forward's future intensified immediately after Argentina's victory over Austria at the FIFA World Cup 2026, where Alvarez hinted at a potential departure from the Madrid-based club ahead of the upcoming summer window.
Alvarez arrived at Atletico in 2024 from English club Manchester City and has quickly become a pivotal asset for manager Diego Simeone, netting 49 goals across 106 appearances. His clinical output has seen him outscore every other teammate at the club over the course of the past two seasons.
The 26-year-old has accumulated 66 total goal involvements since the start of the 2024-25 campaign, more than fellow forward Antoine Griezmann by 18 contributions and establishing himself as the focal point of the Atletico frontline.
While Barcelona has retained a long-standing interest in the player, rivals Real Madrid previously saw a substantial 150 million Euros offer flatly turned down.
In the wake of Alvarez's recent interview, Atletico has issued a firm rebuff to Barcelona's pursuit. According to statements reported by Spanish publication AS and cited by FotMob, internal club sources clarified.
"We've seen how Barcelona operates in the past. There is no amount Barcelona can pay for Julian, and he will not be transferred to Barcelona."
The hierarchy went on to assert that the Catalan club's solitary path to a transfer would be triggering his buyout agreement in full, stating, "Either they pay the 500m Euros release clause or nothing."
Furthermore, Atletico hinted at potential legal ramifications for Barcelona if the situation continues. Meanwhile, Alvarez opened up about his current stance during a conversation with ESPN:
"I can't hide, nor act as if I don't want to be clear, I'm trying to be honest. I spoke with people at Atletico, and I think the best thing for everyone involved is for me to leave. "I want to fulfil my dream."
Alvarez is currently in the Argentina squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
