United States skipper Corey Pavin said his team face an uphill struggle to retain the Ryder Cup after watching Europe surge into a three-point lead here yesterday.

But the combative American captain vowed that his players would come out fighting in Monday's singles finale at Celtic Manor and were still capable of turning the contest around.

Europe need only five points from the 12 up for grabs in the singles to win back the famous trophy they lost at Valhalla two years ago.

"Is it an uphill battle? Yes, of course, because we have to win more points than they do in the
singles," said Pavin.
