Archery World Cup Stage 3: Sahil, Jyothi secure top-10 qualification rankings

Upcoming Indian archer Sahil Jadhav continued his impressive rise on the international circuit by finishing 10th, while veteran Jyothi Surekha Vennam secured seventh place in the compound qualification round of the Archery World Cup Stage 3 here on Tuesday. Fresh from winning his maiden World Cup medal with a bronze in Shanghai last month, Sahil shot 710 points to finish 10th in the men's compound qualifiers. Austria's Nico Wiener topped the standings with 714 points.

As many as seven archers, including Sahil, were tied on 710 points, but the Indian slipped to 10th on X-count. Rishabh Yadav was the next best Indian in 22nd place with 706 points. However, like Parneet Kaur in the women's section, he will miss out on the team event as he is not part of the three-member squad selected for the Asian Games in September-October. The Asian Games-bound duo of Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru (703) finished 33rd, while Kushal Dalal (699) was 43rd. Alongwith Sahil, they will represent India in the men's team competition.

The Indian men's team secured the third seed and will open their campaign against Singapore. In the women's compound event, Jyothi emerged as the best-placed Indian, shooting 700 points to qualify seventh. Chikitha Taniparthi followed closely in 10th place, while Parneet (693) was ranked 18th to be the second and third placed Indians. Asian Games-bound 17-year-old Prithika Pradeep finished last among Indians at 22nd spot with 690 points.

Despite finishing last, Prithika will make the team event as she's a member of the Aichi-Nagoya-bound Asian Games squad. In a strategic move aimed at preparing for the Asian Games, India have decided to field the three archers selected for the Games in last month's trials for team events during the World Cup season, irrespective of their qualification scores.

As a result, Jyothi, Chikitha and Prithika will form the women's team, while Parneet, the fourth member of the squad, will compete only in the individual event. The Indian women's team earned the second seed behind Mexico and advanced directly to the quarterfinals, where they will take on the winner of the match between Italy and the United States. India also secured the fifth seed in the compound mixed team event, with Sahil pairing up with Jyothi. The duo received a first-round bye and progressed directly to the pre-quarterfinals.
