Gyaneshwari Yadav and Raja Muthupandi secure silver medals in women’s 53kg and men’s 65kg categories respectively, while Bindyarani Devi wins bronze in women’s 58kg as country’s weightlifters continue to shine at Glasgow Commonwealth Games with five medals so far

Weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav continued India's medal rush, clinching silver as records were broken left, right and centre in a riveting women's 53kg competition, while experienced weightlifter Bindyarani Devi won the bronze medal in the women's 58kg category at the Commonwealth Games here on Monday.

Bindyarani lifted 87 in the snatch section, and 112kg in clean and jerk for a total lift of 199kg.

Late on Sunday night, weightlifter Raja Muthupandi won a silver medal in the men's 65kg category on his CWG debut.

The 23-year-old Gyaneshwari from Bhondiya village in Chhattisgarh totalled 199kg (88kg snatch + 111kg clean and jerk), but Nigeria's Onome Omolola Didih stole the show with a stunning 206kg (93kg + 113kg), rewriting both the Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records to take the gold.

"I am very happy, I wanted to give my personal best and I have managed to do that," Gyaneshwari said.

On Sunday, Muthupandi lifted 126kg in snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk to finish with a total of 286kg. Muthupandi dedicated his medal to his parents and coach Vijay Sharma. "I am certainly disappointed because my coach had placed his trust in me, believing we would put in the full effort to win gold.

However, I didn't perform well. I dedicate this win to my parents and my coach, Vijay Sharma," Raja was quoted as saying by ANI. In all, Indian weightlifters have won five medals.
