D Gukesh
World champion D Gukesh bowed out of the FIDE Chess World Cup, losing his third-round match to Frederik Svane of Germany. However, R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi cruised into the last-32 stage here on Saturday.
Gukesh lost the second game of the third round under normal time control after he was held to a draw in the first classical game on Friday.
Gukesh misjudged an Italian opening when the match was evenly poised, with the world champion landing into a worse knight-and-pawns endgame, it meant that only black had a chance to win and Svane duly obliged in the endgame.
Meanwhile, a draw was enough for Erigaisi in his battle against Uzbekistan's Shamsiddin Vokhidov to take him to the next round while Praggnanandhaa played a fine game to beat Robert Hovhannisyan of Armenia after the Indian had drawn the opener on Friday.
P Harikrishna and V Pranav also progressed after eliminating Daniel Dardha of Belgium and Titas Stremavicius of Lithuania respectively.
