Muguruza went against all odds to upset Serena and win 7-5, 6-4. The Venezuela-born Spanish tennis player is aged 22 and younger to Serena Williams by 12 years.

She also became the first Spanish tennis player to win a Grand Slam since 1998.

For Serena, it became her second straight loss in a Grand Slam final and also delayed her hopes of tying 22 Grand Slams with Steffi Graf
