Champion trainer Pesi Shroff and veteran schooler Mansing Jadhav were both given five months' suspension by the stewards of the Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) in a meeting held on Monday evening at the Mahalaxmi racecourse.

Shroff was handed an additional sentence of four months which will be held in abeyance, and will take effect only if he is involved in another breach of medication rules.

Three horses trained by Shroff had tested positive for a banned drug during the recent Mumbai racing season; while seven from the Jadhav stables did the same, all of them for Venlafaxine except one.

When mid-day contacted Shroff over the phone yesterday, he confirmed the development, but refused to comment about the case. "I will file my appeal against the verdict tomorrow," he said.

Jadhav, who has 44 years of unblemished record (only one aspirin positive in over four decades!) as a horse trainer, said that he had informed the club he would file his grounds for appeal after he returns to Pune next week and gets the written, official order.
