Sanchita Kalvankar of Gokuldham High School (Goregaon) clinched gold in the girls U-16 javelin throw event of the inaugural Asmita Mumbai Suburban District Girls Athletics meet held at Poinsur Gymkhana (Kandivli) on Friday.
Sanchita's throw of 17.57 metres nearly doubled the distance achieved by silver medal-winner Tanvi Katkar of Oxford Public School (Kandivli), who sent her javelin to the nine metres. It was the latter's first time competing in a javelin throw event, having previously participated only in the 100m and long jump disciplines.
Meanwhile, Gokuldham High School continued its strong showing in the girls U-16 60m race as Saawari Kulkarni took top honours (7.80 secs). Her schoolmate Aishwarya Borade took silver (8.10 secs), while Srushti Sawant of Somaiya School (Vidyavihar) secured the bronze medal (8.40 seconds).
