Indian badminton doubles ace Ashwini Ponnappa is campaigning to save the Cauvery.

Ponnappa, along with her doubles partner Jwala Gutta have qualified for 2016 Rio Olympics. But apart from her training to bring back a medal from Rio and the shuttler is making sure that she's a model Indian citizen doing her bit for the country.

Recently, Ponnappa showed her social activist avatar by tweeting about a issue. She supported the 'Save River Cauvery' cause on the micro-blogging site.

The 26-year-old tweeted an image of herself with a glass of water and captioned it, "#themostessential#savewater#saverivercauvery#drinkingwater"

A railway track is going to be laid from Mysore to Coorg district. The campaign seeks to stop this train line since it will lead to the cutting down of lakhs of trees and hurt the environment.

The enviromentalists claim that the estates and forests around Coorg are the main rain catchment area for River Cauvery and the felling of trees will see a decrease in this.

According the petition, Ponnappa wants people to sign it is important to preserve the Coorg ecology and the Cauvery since it is the lifeline of south India and provides water to over 8 crore people and 600 major industries across the region.
