Gelson Fernandes scrambled the ball into the net at the beginning of the second half to condemn la Furia Roja to a humbling loss, and leave their aspirations of qualification hanging in the balance.

Real Madrid shot-stopper Casillas echoed the frustration of the squad by admitting he could not fathom how the European Champions had managed to lose the match.

"I do not know what has happened to us. We have played better than them, and they have taken their first scoring chance," he said.

"This was an oversight by us, but we tried to get back into the match. From here, we must try and play football to get back into the competition.

"The squad is raging. We are finding it very difficult to accept defeat and the manner in which we lost."
