You have one free evening this week. Are you going to use it to clear that endless to-do list? Or will you catch up with friends you haven't hung out with in weeks? A new viral trend sorts this dilemma out for you.
Doing chores with your friends is all the rage and we are absolutely here for it. The internet calls it "admin night", and it is life-changing. An admin night is simply a gathering of your friends where you dedicate a few hours to finally tick things off that checklist you've been dreading forever. You basically kill two birds with one stone - you get your work done and spend time with your friends.
Kruttika Dixit, a Gen Z therapist, believes that when we perform tasks together, even the mundane ones, there is an increase in motivation.
"We are inherently social beings," says Dixit, "And shared experiences, especially those involving relatability, play a crucial role in emotional regulation and bonding. Simply having someone nearby provides a sense of comfort and reduces stress, even if the workload is not distributed."
This trend also serves as a reminder that friendships do not just mean constantly having elaborate plans and outings. "Many individuals now prefer âlow-maintenance' interactions, where bonding occurs through shared routines rather than planned events," Dixit states.
Tanishka Joshi, 20, and Aarav Garg, 20, do most of their chores together. Tanishka goes with Aarav to the post office every time he wants to mail a letter to his grandmother. "Since both Aarav and I are outstation students, we usually run very homely chores with each other. Even when I go to his place, we tend to cook together," she says. "Doing chores with my friends feels less efficient", says Aarav, "But it's definitely easier when you have someone to do them with you. It's that shared feeling of suffering through something together."
Ritesh Pandey, 20, is often sent to buy groceries. The nearest shop is a short walk from his friend's home as well, so it only makes sense to take his friend along! Ritesh would pick going to the shop over ordering online any day. "I prefer to have someone to chat with while I tick things off my grocery list", he comments. And, there's no delivery fee!
