WhatsApp launches new calling features to improve web and desktop experience (Pic/WhatsApp)
In view of amplifying the use of WhatsApp Web, the Meta-owned application WhatsApp, on Tuesday, July 28, announced a series of new calling features, including the ability to make and receive audio and video calls directly from a web browser.
The recent update by Meta will allow users to place and receive both one-on-one and group voice and video calls on WhatsApp Web without downloading the desktop application.
As per the official statement released by WhatsApp, the new web calling feature has been designed for users who rely on shared computers, work laptops that restrict app installations, or simply prefer using a browser.
Using this new feature, the users will be able to access familiar calling features such as screen sharing, reactions, a dedicated Calls tab, complete call history, and favourite contacts directly through the browser.
The company also highlighted that all calls made through WhatsApp Web will continue to be protected with end-to-end encryption, with no time limits or additional charges.
WhatsApp, while announcing about the new feature, also introduced âCall Transfer'. This feature will allow users to seamlessly move an ongoing group call between devices without disconnecting.
For example, users can start a call on their smartphone or tablet while traveling and transfer it to WhatsApp Web or the desktop app upon reaching home or the office, or vice versa.
To offer greater control over group calls, WhatsApp is also rolling out a âWaiting room feature'. Using this feature, users create a call link with the "Require approval to join" option enabled; participants will first enter a virtual waiting room before being admitted by the host.
The company said, "The feature is intended to give call creators more control over who joins their conversations and when."
The latest update also introduces QuickHD, which improves video quality at the start of calls. Users will now receive high-definition video within the first few seconds of connecting instead of waiting for the video quality to improve gradually.
Considering that the majority of the users have been complaining about the poor audio quality while using the WhatsApp calling feature, the Meta-owned company said that they have integrated noise suppression that will enhance voice clarity during calls so that users' voices can be heard more clearly even in noisy surroundings. The setting can be turned on or off at any time through the in-call settings menu.
WhatsApp also highlighted that the new calling features are being rolled out gradually and will become available to all users in the coming weeks. The update is aimed at making WhatsApp calling more seamless across mobile devices, desktops, and web browsers while maintaining the platform's privacy and security standards.
