Over two months after the mysterious death of emcee Arpita Tiwary, the Malwani police have finally made the first arrest in the murder case late Sunday. The accused has been identified as Amit Hazra, who was her boyfriend Pankaj Jadhav's close friend. Hazra was produced before the court on Monday and remanded in police custody till January 20.

Police sources revealed Hazra's arrest comes after he tested negative in a polygraph test, which was taken by all prime suspects in the case. Reports of the test, taken several weeks ago, came out on Sunday. The polygraph test and the statements Hazra had given to the Malwani police were found to be different and the test has supposedly revealed some shocking things. That, coupled with the circumstantial evidence, led to Hazra's arrest. Jadhav has not been given a clean chit and is still under suspicion, said a police official from Malvani police station.

"The motive behind the murder, how it was executed and the number of people involved has not been revealed yet. The accused in custody will now be enquired," he added. Tiwary, 24, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at Malad's Manavsthal society early on December 11. On December 16, in 'Facebook chat lead fizzles out, cops still clueless,' mid-day had reported on cops' suspicions about Hazra on account of a Facebook chat between him and Tiwary four days before she died. But cops had dismissed the lead deeming it 'insignificant'.
