Audi Multi-Million: 61k for finishing last

In a strange situation that has developed on account of shocking apathy on the part of horse trainers, the juvenile who will finish last in the Audi Multi-Million, the feature event of Saturday's eight-race card, will also take home a decent sum of Rs 61,225. That's because the prime event of the card, offering total stake money of Rs 20 lakh of which Rs 12.25 lakh will go the winner, distributes prize money to the first five finishers, and there are, sadly, only five three-year-olds in the fray.

The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) authorities must take some serious steps to shake the trainers out of this lethargy if they want to continue to project themselves as the country's premier race club.

Be that as it may, even with only five in the fray, the Audi Multi-Million promises to be an exciting affair. While the betting market may get infatuated with the Malesh Narredu-trained Whomakestherules, a stylish winner on debut who is making a quick reappearance in less than two weeks, and Serenita, who lost her last race by a mere whisker, I feel both of them will have to be watchful of another pair: the Imtiaz Sait-trained Sparkling Eyes who may show dramatic improvement over her debut victory, and One Aim, who took a massive jump on the scale of Dynamic Ratings between his two runs on this track. And when four of the five contestants are so closely matched on paper, choosing to bet one of them may turn out to be hazardous. My first nomination, however, goes to Sparkling Eyes whose debut victory was much more impressive than it looked to the naked eye.

First race at 4.15 pm.
