Noida-based techie Viresh Sinha (name changed) unsuspectingly handed over his fiancee to a cyber criminal. Sinha downloaded spying software in her mobile phone and thought he will keep a tab on her this festive season.

Such softwares have become quite popular this festive season especially among parents who want to know about the call and SMS history of their children.
"I downloaded the software from the internet by paying Rs 700 as annual subscription. It was claimed that can get details of call logs, position and listen to the calls without the knowledge of the user. Though the money was deducted from my account the software didn't work." said Sinha.u00a0
"I thought may be it was a prank but then my fiancu00e9e told me that that everyone is getting spam messages and calls from her cellphone. I took it to a mobile repair shop where the technician told me that the software was malicious and a cyber criminal had hijacked the mobile. I cannot even report this to the police. I am taking the help of a cyber expert now," he said.
According to the Internet security companies most of the options of the software available online are malicious.

"Festive season is the time when the use and search for such softwares go up on the Internet. Cyber criminals post malicious programmes on such search pages and the user end up getting the infected programme. So, it is always better to buy the software from a trusted company," said, Ratnamala Dam Manna, Director, Security Technology and Response, Symantec Corp.
Data available with Google trend shows that the search for mobile spy software has risen considerably in the month of August and September as compared to other months.
Cyber crime experts also confirmed getting calls from affected people.
Gurgaon-based cyber crime expert Himanshu Tiwari said, "Generally boy friends use such softwares to spy on their beloved but one should be very careful. In last 15 days I have got many such cases but it's difficult to nab the culprit in many of them. We are also getting calls to spy on children by their parents and girl friends by their boyfriends. However, the software we use is always from a trusted brand."
