Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has called on Members of Parliament from Maharashtra to support the proposed women’s reservation legislation during the upcoming special session of Parliament, while the Congress has raised concerns over the timing and intent of the move, calling it politically motivated, reported PTI. Push for Women’s Reservation Gains Momentum In a letter addressed to MPs from both Houses of Parliament and leaders of political parties in the state, Fadnavis urged them to ensure their presence during the special session scheduled between April 16 and 18. The session is expected to focus on clearing the proposed legislation aimed at operationalising the women’s reservation framework, reported PTI. According to PTI, the Chief Minister described the passage of the bill as a historic step toward strengthening women’s participation in governance. He emphasised Maharashtra’s legacy of promoting gender equality, highlighting that the state already provides 50 per cent reservation for women in local self-government bodies, reported PTI. Special Parliament Session and Legislative Roadmap The Centre is preparing to fast-track the implementation of the women’s reservation law through the introduction of a draft Constitution amendment bill. The proposal includes provisions to expand the strength of the Lok Sabha from the current 543 seats to as many as 850 seats. This expansion is intended to facilitate the implementation of a 33 per cent reservation for women ahead of the 2029 general elections. Additionally, the proposed changes would extend to state legislative assemblies and Union territory legislatures, ensuring similar reservation for women representatives. The process is expected to be linked to a fresh delimitation exercise based on the most recent census data. Congress Calls Move a ‘Calculated Strategy’ Reacting sharply, Congress spokesperson Atul Londhe accused the ruling party of using the women’s reservation bill as a political tool. He argued that the timing of the special session—coinciding with ongoing elections in several states—raises questions about the government’s intentions, reported PTI. Londhe said that if the Centre was genuinely committed to women’s empowerment, the law could have been implemented earlier, soon after its passage. Instead, he alleged that the government is now linking the issue with delimitation to gain electoral advantage, reported PTI. Concerns Over Delimitation and Representation The Congress leader further expressed apprehension about the implications of the delimitation process. Referring to the Delimitation Act, 2002, he noted that the law mandates the formation of an independent Delimitation Commission led by a retired Supreme Court judge. However, he claimed that the involvement of the Election Commission in the current process could raise questions about neutrality, reported PTI. Londhe also warned that the proposed changes might affect the political representation of Other Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes, and Scheduled Tribes. He pointed out concerns raised by southern states, arguing that if population becomes the sole criterion for delimitation, it could reduce their representation in Parliament. (With inputs from PTI)
15 April,2026 05:08 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentActivist Anjali Damania on Wednesday demanded that Rupali Chakankar be summoned for questioning by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing allegations against self-styled godman Ashok Kharat. The SIT was constituted by the Maharashtra government to investigate multiple cases against Kharat, including sexual assault and cheating. Damania cites call records, seeks SIT action Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Damania claimed she possesses call data records indicating repeated communication between Chakankar and Kharat. She alleged that 177 calls were exchanged between the two, including one conversation lasting over 20 minutes in a single day. Based on these claims, Damania said it was necessary for investigators to formally question Chakankar. “Even after a month, she has not been summoned. I will demand before the SIT that she be called for questioning,” Damania said. Claims of wider political and official links Damania also released a list of alleged phone interactions involving Kharat and several politicians and government officials, suggesting that his influence extended across multiple circles. She claimed that while some individuals may have approached Kharat for personal or spiritual reasons, others may have had more specific motives. According to Damania, the circumstances surrounding Kharat’s rise warrant a deeper probe into possible connections and support systems. Questions raised over handling of investigation The activist further alleged lapses in police action, particularly regarding Kharat’s wife, Kalpana Kharat, who is currently absconding. She questioned why surveillance measures were not adequately enforced, suggesting the possibility of negligence or deliberate inaction that may have aided individuals linked to the case. Damania also criticised Chakankar’s earlier remarks describing the issue as a “media trial,” asserting that the call data in her possession justified a thorough and impartial investigation. Financial links under scanner In a related development, police earlier questioned Pratibha Chakankar, sister of Rupali Chakankar, in connection with alleged use of her bank account by Kharat. Investigators are examining financial transactions as part of the broader probe, alongside criminal allegations against the accused. Multiple agencies probing the case Kharat, who remains in police custody, is facing multiple criminal cases, including sexual assault and cheating. The Enforcement Directorate is also probing a suspected money laundering angle and has conducted raids at locations linked to him. Probe intensifies amid growing controversy The case has triggered a political and legal controversy in Maharashtra, with allegations, counter-allegations, and demands for accountability continuing to emerge. Authorities have maintained that the investigation is ongoing, with the SIT expected to examine all relevant evidence, including call records and financial transactions, before drawing conclusions. 15 April,2026 04:47 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentPratap Sarnaik, State Transport Minister and Chairman of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), has directed officials to take concrete and comprehensive steps to reduce the corporation’s mounting financial losses in the 2025–26 financial year. Emphasising the need for immediate corrective action, Sarnaik outlined a clear roadmap aimed at strengthening the financial health of the state-run transport body. The directions were issued during a high-level review meeting at the MSRTC headquarters, attended by Vice Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Madhav Kusekar along with senior departmental officials. Revenue-Expenditure Gap Raises Concerns According to official data presented at the meeting, MSRTC generated an operational revenue of Rs 11,475 crore during the financial year, while total expenditure stood at Rs 12,066 crore. This resulted in a significant loss of Rs 591 crore. Breaking down the figures further, the corporation earns an average of Rs 31.4 crore daily, whereas daily expenditure reaches approximately Rs 33 crore—leading to a recurring daily loss of around Rs 1.6 crore. Sarnaik stressed that narrowing this daily deficit of Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 crore must be treated as a top priority for the administration. Only 8 Divisions Profitable, Majority Continue to Struggle The financial strain is further highlighted by the performance of MSRTC’s 31 divisions across Maharashtra. Only eight divisions—Jalna, Parbhani, Buldhana, Bhandara, Gadchiroli, Akola, Dhule, and Wardha—are currently operating in profit, while the remaining 23 divisions continue to incur losses. The minister expressed serious concern over the deteriorating financial performance of major divisions such as Nashik, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Ratnagiri, Satara, and Thane, which have consistently reported deficits despite their operational importance. Call for Strategic Planning and Accountability Sarnaik underscored the importance of scientific transport planning and optimal utilisation of buses and manpower to improve efficiency. He instructed officials to conduct a thorough analysis of loss-making divisions, identify underlying issues, and implement targeted corrective measures. He also emphasised the need to appoint capable and efficient officers in key divisions that have been persistently underperforming, noting that leadership plays a critical role in turning around financial performance. Nagpur Division Under Scanner Expressing dissatisfaction over continued losses in the Nagpur division for the past two years, Sarnaik flagged administrative lapses, particularly the appointment of non-executive divisional controllers. “Officers without financial and statutory authority cannot effectively manage operations. Such appointments weaken administrative control and must be reviewed,” he said, adding that strong and empowered leadership is essential for operational stability. Comprehensive Reform Plan on the Anvil The minister indicated that a broader reform strategy will soon be rolled out, focusing on administrative discipline, resource optimisation, and enhanced accountability mechanisms. The plan aims to ensure long-term financial sustainability and improved service delivery across MSRTC’s network.
15 April,2026 04:09 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentShiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Wednesday dismissed reports suggesting that he is set to take over as the party president, calling the claims baseless and denied leadership change in party. Taking to the social media platform X, Aaditya Thackeray clarified that there has been no discussion within the party regarding him assuming any new position. The Worli MLA, in a post on X, wrote, “From this morning, there has been news on some TV channels that I am going to be given some position in the party. There is no truth to this news, and there is no such discussion in the party.” Dismissing all the media reports from the last few hours, Thackeray slams the media for carrying news that has no basis. “There is no truth to this news, and there is no such discussion in the party. Please take note of this by all media,” he added. The clarification comes amid speculation in certain media reports about a possible leadership reshuffle within the Shiv Sena (UBT) being on the cards. However, Aaditya’s statement firmly denied any such development, putting an end to the rumours. Aaditya Thackeray urges the government to open Gorai Mangrove Park for the public In a different scenario, the Worli MLA earlier last month wrote to Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, urging him to inaugurate and open the Gorai mangrove park for the public at the earliest. While taking it to social media, Aaditya said that the project was initiated during his tenure as Maharashtra’s environment minister between 2019 and 2022 and was completed last year. However, despite several dates being announced for its inauguration, the facility has not yet been opened to citizens. The Shiv Sena leader further added that the mangrove park and interpretation centre would help people better understand the ecological importance of mangroves and encourage greater public engagement with coastal ecosystems. Aaditya Thackeray also pointed out that he had written to the minister earlier in May last year requesting the opening of the facility, but the park continues to remain closed. He said opening the park would bring citizens closer to mangroves and highlight their importance in protecting coastal biodiversity.

15 April,2026 01:36 PM IST | Thane | mid-day online correspondentA court in Thane district of Maharashtra reportedly acquitted a 53-year-old man accused of raping a minor girl. The court, while passing the order, stated that the prosecution's evidence was not "cogent and clinching" and questioned the victim's claim of recording the act on her phone. According to the PTI, Special Judge Premal S Vithalani (for POCSO Act cases), in the order dated April 9, also highlighted contradictions in the victim's testimony. During the trial, the prosecution alleged that between December 2022 and January 2023, the man, a tailor by profession and neighbour of the 17-year-old victim in Thane city, raped the victim on multiple occasions after obtaining her house keys from her mother, as per PTI. Victim herself recorded the obscene video However, on January 14, 2023, the victim claimed that she had secretly filmed one such incident on January 14, 2023. The victim's mother worked as a cook in the locality. As the girl's father had earlier allegedly raped her, the mother would lock the house from outside and leave the keys with the accused till she returned. The prosecution, while keeping their points during the trial, said that the accused, however, took advantage of the situation, went to the victim's house and raped her on multiple occasions after threatening her. Following the complaint by the victim, the accused was arrested and jailed in January 2023. He was booked under Sections 376(2)(n) (repeated rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court, however, said, "It is highly improbable that the culprit committing rape would allow the victim to video shoot the act on a mobile phone." The order further noted, “While a forensic report mentioned two videos featuring a male person, the prosecution failed to prove those videos in court,” as cited by PTI. The judge also highlighted contradictions between the victim's court testimony and her earlier statement to a magistrate. While she told the court that the first incident happened at the man's house during a tailoring visit, her prior statement claimed he entered her house to commit the crime. He noted, "Definitely, major inconsistencies in two versions would affect the case of the prosecution." The court also pointed out a one-month delay in lodging the FIR and the victim's admission in cross-examination that she had previously filed a false rape case against her father. Acquitting the accused, the court further ordered, "In this situation, it is highly difficult to place reliance on the testimony of the victim," as per PTI. Furthermore, the prosecution failed to establish "foundational facts" to shift the burden of proof onto the accused, the court said, and ordered the man's immediate release. (With inputs from PTI)
15 April,2026 01:16 PM IST | Thane | mid-day online correspondentThree protesting cabbies have been walking the 150km distance from Pune to Mumbai to highlight the plight of app-based cabs and their problems. Affiliated to the Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha, these three have been working as cab drivers in Pune and have been upset with the "injustice" meted out to them as app cab drivers. Starting from Pune on April 10, the trio have walked their way to Mumbai with four halts and reached the city border this morning to be at Azad Maidan on Wednesday to hand over a petition to the authorities. The trio-Parmeshwar Ghonge, Santosh Durge and Vaibhav Bhegde, all in their 40s- had crossed Andheri and reached near the international airport in the evening on their way to Azad Maidan. What is the protest about? The protest has been undertaken to highlight the administration's attention of the administration to the fact that app-based companies are doing business illegally across the state, and there has been strong dissatisfaction among the drivers. In particular, the arbitrary rates displayed on the app, ignoring the orders of the Transport Department, and the continuation of bike taxi services in cities like Mumbai and Nagpur despite several FIRs being filed without any valid license, have caused widespread discontent among both drivers and passengers. Other issues include repeated charging of fees from drivers under the guise of ‘panic button’, lack of transparency in commission, and non-compliance with government-approved rates. In Maharashtra (Mumbai Metropolitan Region), app-based cabs (Ola, Uber, Rapido) are now mandated to follow government-notified rates. These rates aim to balance fares between passenger affordability and driver earnings. But companies have been reportedly ignoring them, citing surge pricing and other factors. Trade union support "We have called it padayatra for justice. The foot march started by three cab drivers from Pune on 10 April 2026 has reached the Andheri Airport area today, 14 April. This march has been organised to protest against the injustice being done to cab drivers in the state and the arbitrary management of app-based companies. On 15 April 2026, these cab drivers will reach Azad Maidan in Mumbai at 4 pm, after which they will meet the transport officials and submit their representation," Dr Keshav Nana Kshirsagar, president: Maharashtra Kamgar Sabha, told mid-day. Kshirsagar has been the pioneer of the OnlyMeter campaign to enforce strict adherence to metered fares for auto rickshaws and taxis, bypassing app-based surge pricing. The plan While the team leader, Dr Keshav Kshirsagar, an MBBS himself, has been guiding the protestors for any medical requirements all along on their way, his team has been providing support by getting the medication required while on the ground. The team has braved the sun and walked the distance with four pit stops at night, Talegaon, Khopoli, Kamothe and Sanpada for two to three hours. The route Pune RTO, Talegaon, Khopoli, Panvel, Kamothe, Sanpada, Vashi, Andheri, Airport, Azad Maidan. The trio Santosh Durge"Our legs ached, the sun drained us out. But the fight needs to go on. The rates given by the government are not seen in the app, due to which there are fights between us and commuters. The app companies are not following government norms, and we are facing the heat. The app bikes are operating illegally and have made a big dent in the business. Despite the government banning them, they are operating with impunity. Besides this, there are a lot of other issues. Parmeshwar Ghonge "We fell ill on the way, had a lot of medical issues, but the determination to fight injustice kept me going, and we were provided with timely medical advice. We intend to reach Mumbai and hand over the petition to the transport minister and the Chief Minister. It is unfair that despite government notification, the rules are not being followed. Vaibhav Bhegde We got blisters on the feet and chafing on the inner thigh due to excessive walking, but the determination to complete the protest has not dwindled. We represent the app cab community, and all this is to get the attention of the government. Various drivers and app cab owners supported us all the way through the journey. Official speak "We have several times asked companies to give government rates on their applications, but companies are pointing fingers at each other for not obeying his orders. We have been following up on the issue," a transport official said.

AklekarA man has allegedly cheated a Thane-based woman of Rs 12.5 lakh by posing as a senior government official and promising her son's admission to IIT Bombay, police said on Wednesday. As reported by news agency PTI, the accused, who resided in the same housing complex as the woman in the Diva area, posed as an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer. He further claimed to have a strong influence in various government departments with an aim to dupe the victims. The accused assured the 45-year-old woman that he could secure admission for her son in the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. An official from the Mumbra Police station, while briefing about the case, said, "On this pretext, he collected Rs 12,50,000 from the victim over a period of time in 2023," as cited by PTI. However, when the promise did not materialise, and the woman questioned him, the accused gave evasive replies. Days after paying the accused Rs 12.5 lakh, the woman realised that she had been duped. After taking things into consideration, she approached the police and filed a complaint earlier this week. The officials further added that an FIR was registered on Monday against the accused under relevant legal provisions for cheating, forgery and impersonation, as per PTI. Mumbai temple priest duped of Rs 84 lakh in fake flat deal Earlier, in a different scenario, a 52-year-old temple priest from Vikhroli was allegedly duped of Rs 84 lakh in a fake flat deal in a Bhandup redevelopment project. Police have booked a developer, his associate, and bank officials for cheating and criminal conspiracy. Police have booked a developer, his associate and bank officials, alleging that the accused built credibility through a bank-sanctioned home loan and selectively verified documents, before routing large sums through multiple accounts and concealing prior transfer of development rights. How the deal was made to look legitimate Home loan of Rs 33 lakh arranged via the accused’s contacts Loan sanctioned and disbursed by bank officials Payments made via bank transfers, cheques, and online modes What exposed the fraud Civil dispute filed in 2023 by original project stakeholders Probe revealed The flat belonged to an original member, not the accused Development rights were already transferred years earlier Key facts concealed (With inputs from PTI)
