Can John Kelai set new Mumbai marathon course record?

Two-time Mumbai Marathon winner, Kenya's John Kelai believes Mumbai's "surprisingly" cool climate this time round could see him better his personal best timing of 2:09:09, set at the 2005 Eindhoven Marathon in the Netherlands.

"Before landing in Mumbai, I had a feeling that it would be warm here once again as is the case around this time of the year. But I was surprised to see that it was much cooler than I had imagined. I hope that the climate remains like this on race day as that will help me improve my timing," Kelai said yesterday.

Elite Athletes co-ordinator Ian Ladbrooke too agreed with Kelai. "It's cooler this time than last year. If the weather Gods are kind on race day, we can expect a new course record," he said.

India has been a happy hunting ground for Kelai. "India has a special place in my heart, as I've not only won two titles in Mumbai, but I also won the gold medal in the marathon event of the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year. I hope I can win again this year," he said.
