With the motto to travel around the world and spread the message of peace, a Chinese navy hospital ship sailed into the city, docking at the Mumbai port last week. A 10-member delegation comprising of medical professionals later stepped out to visit various hospitals in the city, including Navi Mumbai’s D Y Patil Hospital and Research Centre in Nerul.

The delegation, which included doctors and nurses from various medical streams like gynaecology, cardiology, physiotherapy and pathology, were given a tour of the facility, and were even taken on an excursion to the D Y Patil international stadium. The purpose of the visit to D Y Patil hospital was to understand the medical facilities and treatments available in the satellite city.

Dr James Thomas, professor of cardiac surgery at the D Y Patil hospital, who is an honorary consultant and advisor to the armed forces medical services, was seen coordinating their visit to the hospital. The delegation’s first stop was the stimulation centre where they were shown the research being conducted in various fields by students and faculty. The Chinese doctors and nurses, besides observing different medical procedures, were seen sharing their perspective as well.

They also raised many queries about the procedures, even asking doctors at the stimulation centre to repeat a few demos to get a better understanding. After their visit to the stimulation centre, the delegates visited the radiology and cardiology department at the hospital too.

“The Chinese hospital ship is an emergency medical support platform having eight operation theatres and nearly 300 beds. The ship, which is three floors high, has on board doctors and nurses who have been halting at various ports across the world on their journey. During their visit to our hospital, an interesting exchange of ideas took place. Their motto is to travel throughout the world and spread the message of peace,” said Dr Thomas. After the visit, the delegates who were not allowed to officially speak to the media, looked quite pleased with their visit to the city.
