For an artist the blank canvas often serves as the backdrop to unleash his or her creativity.
However, for artist Boshudhara Mukherjee, the canvas itself is the protagonist. In her latest exhibition, titled The Dangling Conversation, Mukherjee applies an innovative technique whereby she paints the canvas using acrylic and oil, and then cuts and weaves the canvas creating new patterns. Her inspirations include her grandmother’s sarees, miniature paintings, abstract expressionism, as well as geometric and archaeological patterns.

In her creations, she also uses everyday materials such as plastic, paper, tape and cloth. Since Mukherjee believes in recycling and providing new contexts for these materials, her artworks are open to interpretation. Behind her vibrant and unusual artworks lies the philosophy that creation is not possible without destruction — to emphasise the idea that one must still pick up the pieces and carry on, though scars may remain forever.
