Dhokla khaava che, MS Parker Bowles?

At the opening of the CWG last week, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, reportedly feasted on samosas, dhoklas and halwa. The GUIDE shortlists Mumbai's best snack stops that any self-respecting foodie, including the royal couple, must make on their next trip to the city

If you are looking for authentic Gujarati dhokla or are in the mood for experimenting with different flavours, head straight to Chheda Store, a hit with the business community. The store has been around since 1995, and has gained a fan following because of its innovative dhoklas, which include the Paneer Sandwich, Moong Dal and White dhoklas.

SOME MORE SAMOSAS?

Guru Kripa's Punjabi Samosas are best eaten with spicy green and tangy tamarind chutneys and a side portion of spicy chickpeas (cholley). As you sink your teeth in, the crispy crust gives way to a potato-and-peas filling that is stuffed. This popular joint has been drawing crowds from across the city and the country, since 1975. Some claim that that at least one-third of the samosas available in Mumbai's cinema halls, college canteens and multiplexes originate from this legendary outlet in Sion.
While Guru Kripa has earned its way into the hall of fame as one of the city's best snack joints, Swati Snacks isn't too far behind. The popular, cosy eatery in south central Mumbai is a must on every tourists' food map. Often, one spots food tour guides making a beeline for the joint, giving tourists an opportunity to enjoy traditional Indian snacks, including their prized version of the samosa.

ICING ON THE HALWA

Brijwasi's Special Ice Halwa is a calorie-bursting treat that everyone craves for because of the sugar rush that hits you as you sink your teeth in. Thin sheets of halwa are garnished with dried fruits, a sinful craving that's bound to cost you many extra hours at your local gym. But it's all worth the effort as Brijwasi promises customer satisfaction with its sweet delights, and that's reason enough to drop by for a tasting.
For those who have a soft spot for Pineapple Halwa, like the royal couple, drop by at Malad's MM Mithaiwala. It was established way back in 1951, and has steadily grown to include a range of mithai, farsan and fast food. They also do a Strawberry Halwa. Both halwas are square-shaped, paper-thin slices that are garnished with dried fruits and come in pineapple yellow and strawberry red.
