Dr Zeus: Snoop Dogg can help me achieve my dream

Best remembered for his 2003 track, Kangna, which continues to feature on party playlists, Dr Zeus is set to get his fans grooving again with Woofer. A collaboration with American rapper Snoop Dogg, the dance track also features Bollywood actor Nargis Fakhri and vocalist Zora Randhawa. Shot entirely in Los Angeles, the single is part of an album that Zeus plans to release this year. The singer talks to mid-day about the song that attempts to blend western and Punjabi rap.

Why did you decide to get Snoop Dogg aboard?
I want to make Punjabi music popular across the world, and that can only happen with the help of renowned international artistes. Snoop Dogg is a legend; his fan base spans across continents. He can help me achieve my dream.

Did you record with him?
We jammed at a Los Angeles studio. I explained the concept of the track to him. Making him comprehend the meaning of words like Habibi was fun. Snoop recorded his portions and sent them to us a couple of weeks later.

How was the experience of recording with Nargis Fakhri? Did you use the auto tuner for her parts?
The auto tuner is used on every voice nowadays. I used the software on her voice because it’s fashionable. It gives a trendy effect to vocals. But she didn’t need it. She sang in tune, and understands music. I wanted to add an American touch to the song and her accent helped. Her lines are in English.

How long did she take to deliver it?
She heard the song at our first meeting in India, and then when we began recording it at a US studio.
It took her 20 minutes to record her part.

Fusion of Punjabi and rap seems to be a hit formula. Why do you think it works?
With Punjabi and rap fusion, non-Indians feel the mystics of Indian melodies, and Indians get to experience Western tunes.

Are you working on any Bollywood project?
A few films are in the pipeline. I now reside in Mumbai and even have a studio. I plan to work on Punjabi pop music, international projects and Hindi film songs.

Do you plan to recreate any of your past hits?
I’ve already planned to recreate Kangna. I intend to relaunch it as my last song of this album.
