Constables Avinash Waghchoure and Arun Bangar were sent to arrest Uttam Gaikwad, who is involved in burglaries and robberies in Kalwa and Mumbra. The accused was also wanted in connection with a failed bank robbery in Kalwa last week.

The motorcycle-borne constables were dispatched to nab Gaikwad after the Kalwa police received a tip-off that the accused was visiting his residence in Atkoneshwar Nagar.

The constables reached the address, but Gaikwad’s wife and other relatives put up some resistance and did not let the cops enter the house.

The two cops managed to gain access into the criminal’s home and were trying to whisk him away to the police station on the motorcycle, when Gaikwad whipped out a dagger and stabbed Waghchoure in the stomach and Bangar was injured in the mob attack. With both cops injured, Gaikwad managed to break free. Then a mob descended on the two constables forcing them to flee the spot.

The injured cops called for backup and were rushed to a private hospital.

Enraged mob
The mob however proceeded to the residence of local corporator Mangala Kamble at about 2.30 am, where they unleashed their ire thinking that it was she who had tipped-off the cops.

“They set fire to my Qualis, an auto rickshaw and a Tavera parked nearby. They thought I was the one who tipped the police off,” Kamble said.

A case has been registered against Gaikwad’s wife Mathura, while his aunt Shanti Rajesh has been booked for attempted murder. A separate case has been registered against unknown persons for setting fire to the vehicles. However, Gaikwad managed to escape and the cops are on the lookout for him.u00a0
