Famed European perverts come to Mumbai

Titled, The Genius of Perverspective, this new exhibit binds works of artists who shared a fondness for perverting ordinary perceptions. For the first time, art lovers get a rare opportunity to feast on Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Arman

You walk up to an Indian guy and say, You guys are cheap!

Thank you for noticing. Thank you. Hey, that guy just called you cheap! No, no, no. He pronounced it cheap. But what he was saying was SMART. Evidently, stand-up-comic Russell Peters knows that Indians appreciate value. So does Gaurav Assomull, CEO of Marigold Fine Art.

From Europe with love: Signed, numbered and certified originals can be yours for between Rs 3,00,000 to Rs 30,00,000 at this exhibition, and works include paintings, lithographs, prints and sculptures by a host of European artists including Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Arman and Andy Warhol. Works by Patrick Hughes, whose experiments with three-dimensional imagery are immensely popular, will be available here, as will photographs by Serge Mendjisky, who claims to have once been told by Picasso himself, that accurate cubism would fully be achieved through photography. Pop art aficionados will love the works of Ju00f6rg Du00f6ring, whose collection, Gaurav tells us, "Includes oversized and unique Mickey and Donald paintings and he has tied up with renowned photographer Sam Shaw for exclusive rights to some of the most unique photographed poses of Marilyn."

Pick a Picasso: Gaurav shares the story behind the Picasso lithographs and that the pieces on display are from the artist's 1969 series that were created when art supplies arrived in large cardboard boxes at Picasso's Mougins studio on the French Riviera. "When his butler wanted to clear the boxes, Picasso stopped him and chose instead to use the material as his canvas," Gaurav narrates. Twenty-nine paintings were thus created and over the next year, lithographs of these were produced under Picasso's supervision. You'll also see some of Salvador Dali's surrealist bronze sculptures here like his, Dance of Time II which shows the Melting Watch, a well-recognised Dali symbol that depicts the fluidity of time.

More from Marigold: Having recognised the Indian public's love for their cinematic idols, Gaurav says that he plans to encourage Ju00f6rg Du00f6ring to work on a series of Amitabh and Shahrukh portraits in the future. His Delhi-based gallery also plans to constantly introduce the Indian public to and educate them about the works of European masters and contemporary artists. "I would encourage everyone to drop by and at least view the exhibition. Even if you don't leave with a masterpiece, you're sure to leave with a fresher perspective on art."

At: The Viewing Room, 4th Floor, Elysium Mansion, 7, Walton Road, Colaba Causeway.
From March 18 to 21.
